Hebrews  4

There are two clear observations that can be picked up from this chapter. First- Paul is speaking of a Sabbath rest that comes from the Lord. His promise of rest is fulfilled when our faith is placed in the Lord (4:2). Second- rest comes from actively serving God’s purposes in the power of the Holy Spirit (4:12). Some degree of rest can be found through recreation and entertainment, but rest that refreshes your spirit comes from the Lord.

Are you letting Jesus take care of the rest in your life? Consider the following practical thoughts…

R – Realize you can’t do everything…instead, set boundaries around those relationships you should cherish the most- Jesus… your spouse… your family…your church family, etc. Recognize what hobbies, sports, or interests may divert your attention inappropriately away from these important people in your life.

E – Expect to work hard…God created the Earth in six days and rested on the seventh day. Build a discipline of rest somewhere in your life, otherwise, you will burn out.

S – Seek to live in peace with others as much as possible…you will disappoint some people, so always seek to point others towards Christ, and let go of the burden to please everyone. (Heb 12:14-16)

T – Trust God’s Will, God’s Way…suffering, hardships, and trials are part of this temporary world, but Jesus leads us to the promise of eternal refuge (Ps 64:10). Be refreshed in the Lord by finding joy in the Holy Spirit.

Enter into God’s REST, and discover God’s mission of grace for this new school year.
