Deuteronomy 17 – another chapter – more laws. Is this relevant today? Let me share some thoughts…

The chapter’s opening verses (1-7) begin by admonishing the Israelites how to worship God and keep His covenant. Now I realize in the 21st century we don’t sacrifice animals or stone people for breaking laws. Christ became the final sacrifice for all mankind (1 Peter 1:19). But these verses should remind us how important it is to set God in the place of honor – the FIRST place (Ex. 20:3) – in our lives. In true worship, everything is submitted to God’s authority.

The remainder of Deuteronomy 17 elaborates on court cases, going before Levitical priests and choosing a king. I believe Deuteronomy 17:8-11 reinforces the need for Godly counsel. Many times, we need guidance in our personal walk. There are numerous references found in both Old & New Testaments:

  • “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5)
  • “Let every soul be subject to governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God…” (Romans 13:1)
  • “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days. There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel – that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:20-21)

Take Deuteronomy 17 to heart and remember to seek counsel. Not just any counsel – GODLY counsel. God’s Word is the ultimate litmus test when seeking guidance for life’s circumstances and relationships.
