JESUS IS FOR . . . THE HUMBLE AND FATIHFULL

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit . . . she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear . . . Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” (Lk 1:39-45)

Christmas reminds us that God doesn’t forget those who trust in Him.  Elizabeth had years of disappointment as a wife who could not bear children, but she never became bitter or rejected God’s love and faithfulness.  That humble trust was rewarded long after she assumed her child bearing years were over.  And when Mary comes to see her, she shares with Mary what she has learned over the years – that despite years of disappointment, “Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.”

Many years later Jesus would echo Elizabeth’s example when He said, “The greatest among you will be your servant.  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Mt 23:11-12)
