Are You Awake?

A quick glance through Mark 13 reveals five references pertaining to keeping watch and maintaining our guard.

“Watch out” … (v.5)

“Be on your guard” … (v.9)

“Be on guard! Be alert!” (v.33)

“Therefore keep watch” … (v.35)

“Watch!” (v.37)

What are we supposed to during those times? I believe the answer can be found in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NIV) As Christians, consistently demonstrating an attitude of prayer is essential. We all have times of uncertainty … including pastors. Praying in the middle of contentious circumstances opens up the line of communication with our Father allowing the Holy Spirit to influence our hearts and minds. Ultimately aligning us with God’s will. But don’t pray like you’re holding your breath … waiting for something to happen. This can lead to spiritual deception and make us vulnerable to lies. Take a deep, cleansing breath in and out, releasing your trust to the One who will return. Pray in faith expecting Christ’s calmness to smother the doubt and provide exactly what is needed.
