Gentle Restoration

“Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” (Galatians 5:26 -6:1)

God intended life to be lived in relationship. Don’t believe me? Read the scripture. Why else would Paul warn us against provoking each other unless we were living in relationship?

First – Life is going to be challenging. Envy and conceit only happen in relationship. Think about it – ever been envious of yourself? These emotions manifest out of pride when we place ourselves above others. Not exactly the relationship plan God designed.

Second –Problems will arise. We’re going to sin. The difference is, my sin isn’t just my sin. It effects those on the journey with me. This is why we need to look out for one another. And when we become aware of sin, point it out, not arrogantly but in love to restore right fellowship with Christ.

Third – Keep ourselves right before God. We do not live in an isolation booth. We are not better than anyone else. We too can fall into sin and drag those around us down if we are not careful to guard our hearts and remain humble before God. This allows us to love others through the Spirit while keeping our negativity in check.
