Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
In July 2014 I took our high school youth to Honduras for our annual mission trip. We went to Give Hope 2 Kids to build a bridge on the property of their orphanage. We teamed up with another missionary name Allen Sowers who specializes in building bridges in Honduras. Throughout the week I had a chance to get to know Allen and know his story of how he became a missionary in rural Honduras.
Allen was an average Christian family who lived in Fairfax County (near DC). He started a construction company that specialized in building million dollar homes in the DC area. His company was doing amazing and through his hard work and the favor of God he was able to acquire wealth for him and his family.
One day while building another big home Allen heard from God that he should leave his company building homes and start building the kingdom of God. He did not know what that meant until he went on a short term mission trip with his church to Honduras. Allen saw the need for building local pastors homes in Honduras.
One day Allen shut down his company and moved with his four kids to rural Honduras. They have been in Honduras for many years now. I ask Allen was it hard leaving wealth and comfort to go to Honduras and he responded by saying “it was hard to realize that I spent most of my life pursing wealth and comfort, and not God’s Kingdom.”
Allen’s story reminds me of the above verse. It is a question that God ask us every day and our response should be the same everyday “send me Lord, I’ll go”.
