Matthew 26:40–41 NLT
Then Jesus returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
It hurts to watch the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus. In his darkest hour they were asleep, and when the crisis came it caught them unprepared. When the time came to take up their cross with Christ, instead they scattered to the winds. Jesus asked them to watch and pray, to live with their eyes and souls wide open, sensitive to the Holy Spirit. He invites us to be spiritually awake so that when temptations and trials come, we will be prepared.
Other Passages: Matthew 6:13, Ephesians 6:14
Prayer: God, I thank you for putting a willingness in my heart to keep my eyes open in prayer. Help me stay awake, sensitive to the move of your Spirit and alert to the corrupt forces that would cause me to stumble.
