“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)
Grace and Truth must meet together. Grace isn’t just about salvation no more than Truth is just about following the rules. Delicate as any tightrope act, both are needed to achieve balance. We cannot substitute tolerance for grace without compromising the Truth of the Word of God. Although grace is a radical extension of God love saying, “Even though you’re a hot mess, come as you are … God has something better” it’s only when we recognize God’s amazing grace that we can fully live in His Truth. The verse above clearly draws a line between Moses giving the law (hard, unyielding) and the beauty of Grace and Truth coming THROUGH Christ. Randy Alcorn put it this way, “People need the directions of truth to know where to go. Then they need the empowerment of grace to help them get there.” (The Grace and Truth Paradox: Responding with Christlike Balance)
Only when we put Grace and Truth together is the True Light revealed and we are able to find our way out of darkness.
