We are reintroduced to Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro as he visits him in Exodus 18. I love the picture that their relationship paints.
Moses is 80+ years old, so we can assume that Jethro is substantially older than that. Now it wouldn’t be surprising for Moses to show regard for his elder, but instead we see a reciprocal humbling and a mutual respect. Both men learn something from the other and their respective lives are enriched by the relationship.
This is the beauty of a mentor/mentor relationship, also described in Proverbs 27:17; “As iron sharpens iron; so one man sharpens another.” Every individual has the power to bring out the very best of who are right now and who God is calling us to be. Each generation has valuable lessons to teach us if we will humble ourselves and listen. In my 40+ years as a believer, some of my very best lessons and wisest insights came from little children and new believers.
At Cornerstone we are a four generational church – what a blessing to be part of a church family that treasures every generation! None of us are here by accident, for the Father is carefully knitting us together into a beautiful tapestry, where each strand has great value and plays an important part in creating the living picture of Christ’s body for this community to touch, see and experience for themselves! Let it be true of us that “Everyone Leads Someone” AND everyone learns from each generation!
