Deuteronomy 20 begins by God commanding Israel not to fear in war. The High Priest was to share about God’s abiding presence and His past faithfulness. He was also to remind them that the outcome of this war (or any battle) was not dependent upon the strength or size of the opposing army. Israel wasn’t to compare its armaments; because God alone determines the victory. Additionally, comparison can bring discouragement and fear instead of faith in the Lord.
Next he addressed those soldiers whose focus was on everything but the task at hand. Some had new houses, some new vineyards, while others had a fiancé. These exemptions were given because of God’s compassion. Then the fearful were given their “walking papers.” This exception was given for the success and morale of the army because when fear goes unchecked it’s contagious.
And after everyone had been given opportunity to walk away, only then were officers selected. Leadership is reserved for those whose hearts are fully focused on the battle at hand. Why? Because little is worse in the heat of a battle than distracted soldiers. Lives and wars are lost when the battle isn’t foremost in the hearts of those leading the charge.
So today we can know that:
Since God will be with us in our battles, we are commanded not to fear.
Victory isn’t dependent upon our strength or that of our weapons.
We can lead faithfully when we reject fear and focus on God and the victory that His presence brings!
