Deuteronomy 10:12-13 says, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.”
Whenever we are asked to do a project or we start a new career path, we often times desire to know what is expected of us. In this text, I believe that God is giving Israel the basic things that He requires of them. Although this text is written to Israel, these are also things as Christians that we need to remember and apply to our lives as well. He ask that we (1)fear Him, (2)walk in obedience, (3) love Him, (4) serve Him with all our hearts and souls, and (5) observe His commands.
To fear Him isn’t an unhealthy fear, it’s simply honoring and respecting Him. When we walk with someone in the natural, we walk pretty close to them. We’re not silent the entire walk, but we communicate with the person that we are walking with. To walk is an action. We’re not sitting down doing nothing; we’re taking action and doing the things that we know that God wants us to do, such as reading our Bibles and praying. Our obedience should flow from our gratitude and love for God, not from our desire to earn God’s favor. It then becomes a pleasure to serve Him by serving others.
