King David, a man after God’s own heart, caught looking. He wasn’t hurting anyone by just looking, was he? Trouble is, what started as a look, became an inquiry which lead to action ultimately costing the lives of Bathsheba’s husband & child.
Rarely is sin so bold walking up to you, introducing itself while you hold open up the door to your heart, “Come on in.” But we do. “Just one more drink. I can handle it. I’m just talking to them online. It’s not like I’m ever going to meet them. Pills help me deal with the pain. I’m not addicted” Sin enters our lives so subtly, exploiting our weak areas. Let’s try an illustration: Winter’s coming. We all know that means cold & flu season! The benefits of eating right, exercising & adequate sleep help keep our immune systems healthy. Right? Protecting us from germs we’re exposed to in our daily lives. When our immunity is weak, we become vulnerable. Now, let’s think about this is terms of sin. Little actions we think are harmless are actually foundation stones on our path to destruction. So how do we STOP … before the “look” becomes an action? Making God & His Word the CENTER of our lives. “Your Word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” (Psalms 119:11) Just like healthy eating maintains & fuels your immune system, daily doses of the Word fill our minds with Jesus’ thoughts, keeping us in right position before God, & allows the Holy Spirit to convict, stopping sin before it takes root in our hearts.
