2 Samuel 17

This passage serves as a reminder to readers that passages of scripture should always be interpreted in light of the context of all of scripture. No reading of 2 Samuel 17 makes complete sense without understanding 2 Samuel’s larger context.

Absalom is in full-fledged rebellion mode against his father David and has taken over the throne of Jerusalem. The fruit of David’s past transgressions (2 Samuel 11) help explain Absalom’s evil intentions to destroy his father. Consider the larger context of 2 Samuel 17 by asking the following questions:

  1. What key verses outside Chapter 17 inform the meaning of the text? Read 2 Samuel 15:13-15, 15:31, and 16:15-23.
  2. Who are the key people mentioned in this chapter? Absalom and his men, David and his men, Ahithophel, Hushai, and a few other key characters.
  3. How does your theological understanding of God’s Word inform our view of David and Absalom? David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), while Absalom openly rebelled against his earthly father.
  4. What key themes can be understood from this passage? There are many possible themes, but here are a few obvious choices: 1. God’s forgiveness doesn’t remove God’s consequences. 2. Parenting: Rules w/o relationship equal rebellion. 3. Honor your father & mother. 4. God answers the prayers of the faithful (15:31).

Don’t avoid studying difficult passages of scripture, instead, look at the larger context of all of scripture to deepen your faith in Christ.
