Hebrews Eleven gives vivid accounts of Old Testament saints who boldly lived out their faith in the midst of deep trials. God had promised them something and they responded in faith to that promise, which was pleasing to God.

But what is faith? Verse one unpacks it for us. Faith is the confidence, the sureties that whatever God has promised can be relied upon. In fact the word substance means “that which stands under, a foundation.” So our faith is something that is weight bearing; that which can be built upon.

The things we cannot discern from our senses can still be relied upon – when that reliance is placed in God. Their faith in God built a bridge that their hope could step out on. It connected their lives with the assurance that what God’s infinite grace had promised could be not only hoped for, but trusted. And we too, can choose to take God at His word and live in the reality that faith builds for us.

Faith is a requirement for pleasing God and God’s grace-filled gift is found in Romans 12:3- reminding us that God has given everyone a measure of faith. A faith life that’s delightful to God emerges when we begin exercising the mustard seed of faith that Jesus promised could move mountains. It’s not about the size of our faith, it’s about the trustworthiness of WHO that faith is in and God’s eternal track record is without failure!

Faith placed in God alone will bring the eventual fulfillment of His promises; we have His Word on it!
