Our Part Remains

Deuteronomy 2 brings a “bird’s-eye-view” of King Sihon’s defeat. Verse 24 popped out at me; “…See, I have given into your hand Sihon and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.”

Ok, I read that and thought “Wait a minute, if God had given them land, then why was there still a battle coming?” The Lord quickly whispered that although the land WOULD be theirs, they still had to walk out their part in obedience and while the battle’s end result was set; it didn’t mean that they’d escape the battlefield experience.

Sometimes we imagine that if the battle is the Lord’s that He’ll do all the fighting. But that isn’t usually the case. As soldiers in His army we still need to walk in obedience and do whatever He asks. Sometimes that means picking up our armor and stepping up to where the battle lines are drawn. Other times He’ll do it all. But I have to warn you; in my 40+ years as a believer I can count on one hand the times He “did it all”. Usually He expected me to do what I could and then trust Him to do what only He can do.

Are there any promises that you’re still waiting on? Be encouraged that the One who made the promise is able and faithful to do His part. Never forget that the mere existence of the battle doesn’t negate His promises and possession in God’s eyes begins with the battle’s dawn!
