Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Day 6, Pages 48-62

Luke 10:38-42 Martha was NOT Jesus centered. Two statements reveal wrong beliefs in her heart- ‘Lord, don’t You care?’- judging His motives, and character. Then she says, ‘Tell her to help me!’- thinking she can tell God (Jesus) what to do! Mary was listening to Jesus, focusing on Him. She chose the better option of sitting at His feet, listening with her heart and learning to be Jesus centered. Our goal is to become consistently conscious of His life and love for us.

Emotional Health and Contemplative Spirituality; “…both are powerful…when engaged in separately. But together they offer nothing short of a spiritual revolution, transforming the hidden places deep beneath the surface.” (p 44) And let’s be honest, isn’t deep beneath the surface where we need help? But instead, sometimes we simply remove the offending situation without dealing with what is actually underneath. Think of it this way; do you want to use a hoe or a shovel in dealing with problem areas? A hoe takes away most of the “weed”…for now, but … Read More

Galatians 5:22-23 Here, Paul contrasts the fruit of the spirit to the acts of the sinful nature. Often times, we divorce our everyday actions and emotions in life from what we say we believe. The way of Jesus though, was a beautiful life highlighted by the fruit of the spirit of God. Take a moment, pause, and reflect on your attitudes, actions, and emptions you have experienced over the last day. Where did you experience joy? How did you handle frustration and troubles? When did you sense the Holy Spirit … Read More

“Because people are having real, and helpful, spiritual experiences in certain areas of their [church] lives . . . they mistakenly believe they are doing fine, even if their relational life and interior world is not in order.” (p15) In the Gospel of John, Jesus constantly invites people to see and step into the light.  Do you feel God’s grace when you think of looking at some of the relationship and personal problems that need to change in your life? If you don’t,  remember God’s grace is sufficient for you … Read More

“It wasn’t until the pain exposed how much was hiding under my surface of being a ‘good Christian’ that it hit me: whole layers of my emotional life had lain buried, untouched by GOd’s transforming power.”- p. 11 As we begin this journey towards spiritual growth, its important that you and I come to God in honesty and vulnerability. He may want to open our eyes to see where we have been pretending. He may try to speak to us about destructive habits and attitudes that we have neglected to … Read More

“Christian spirituality, without an integration of emotional health, can be deadly to yourself, your relationship with God, and the people around you” Today’s reading in EHS gives us great insight of what Christ truly wants for our lives. God wants us to thrive spiritually and emotionally. The author Peter Scazzero says that “Christian spirituality, without an integration of emotional health, can be deadly to yourself, your relationship with God, and the people around you” (Pg. 7). When we ignore our emotions “externally we appear kind, gracious, and patient, but inwardly … Read More

“And Jesus said to them all, ‘Anyone who wants to come with me must forget self, take up their cross every day, and [choose to] follow me.’” (Luke 9:23, GNB) Jesus has already made you the center of His love! He gave up Heaven to come and offer His life for you. He rose again to forever protect and care for you and, even right now, the Bible says He sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for you (Hebrews 7:25). You may not understand all that means, … Read More

Returning to Your First Love

“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance … Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. (Revelation 2:2, 4-5)   In Revelation 2, Jesus wants the members of a very good church in Ephesus to start thinking about their first love again. He wants them to get back to living a life where Jesus is first in their hearts and center of their days. He wants … Read More

The Power to Go On

January 1, 2015Pastor's Blog

Acts 1:1-5 The book of Acts is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. Luke’s gospel detailed the life of Jesus, his death, his resurrection, and his ascension. Before Jesus ascended into heaven he told the church leaders that he will give them “power from on high” (Luke 24:49); that power is the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that it would be impossible for The Church to move forward without the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that will empower followers of Jesus to be a “witness” to a dark … Read More
